The Mott MacDonald Group is a world-class management, engineering and development consultancy. Their in-house design team wes struggling redesigning their brand identity. I helped build their bridges.
Context
Mott MacDonald has over 14,500 staff located in 150 offices, with revenues in excess of £1 billion. The Group is engaged in public and private sector development across a wide range of markets, including: Buildings, Communications, Education, Environment, Health, Industry, Oil & Gas, Power, Transport, Urban Development and Water. Some of the Group’s projects include: Blackfriars Bridge, Mersey Tunnel, Severn Road Bridges, Kuala Lepar Bridge, Channel Tunnel, Heathrow Terminal 5, Indira Gandhi International Airport, Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City, Twickenham Rugby Stadium and Wembley Stadium.
The Group contracted Fathom Creative in 2009 when the in-house identity team hit a brick wall in terms of getting unanamous approval from the board. We were tasked with critiquing all the design work created thus far and providing suggestions for development/improvement. This critique lead to a second phase of work which was to take charge of all the design routes and then develop them in accordance with what had been set out in the critique. This phase of work helped us distill the process from eight routes down to three recommendations, with one final design recommended as the most ‘forward thinking and progressive’ development from their existing identity (circa 1989). The chosen identity was launched later that year with all collateral being produced by the in-house team.
We helped steer the design process. We added creative value along the way. Most importantly we helped the Mott MacDonald Group achieve approval at boardroom and senior management level.
